Down to Agribusiness
The Kununurra Agricultural Society has continued on an improving trend over the last year. Labour shortages are still affecting ‘normal’ operations, for KAS as for all businesses in the East Kimberley, but vandalism has passed KAS by in 2022 and border closures have come to an end. The annual show went ahead with record gate numbers; and we are emerging from ‘survival mode’ after a pretty rough run.
The great atmosphere of the Kununurra Agricultural Show was once again enjoyed by all. Pavilion volunteers stepped up to assist when cooking coordinator, Tara, was unavailable. The online ticketing system was used again, with a return to the option of cash sales at the main gate and bar appreciated by attendees. We welcomed about 6,900 people through the gate, and the addition of exhibitors that were stuck in the NT for 2021 rounded out the entertainment program for the 50th show.
Online payment services for Showdayonline and Humanitix have improved with the addition of Stripe and Square payments as options.
The repairs and improvements to the grounds and buildings are finally finished, and the acquittal for the $124,999 grant received from the Department of Agriculture Water and Environment in 2019 has been accepted. Ablution block maintenance and painting was completed; cattle yard repairs completed, and solar lights have finally been installed in the equestrian area. FRRR sponsorship has paid for street banner design, production and delivery. Optitel have finally completed the migration of the KAS landline out of Telstra.
The volunteer committee relies heavily on the support officer and caretakers, KAS cannot function without them, as all current committee members are already at capacity. We have been very lucky to be able to continue to employ Jenny Spragg as our support officer, also Lae Khemphone, Annette Boogaard, Monique Meeuws and Greg Hilton as caretakers, along with caravan park volunteers: Ken Austin and Craig Hugall.
Committee and life members always deserve more recognition than can be expressed here. I’d like to thank everyone for their efforts in support of the Kununurra Ag Society objectives.
KAS is making slow progress towards a small caravan park expansion, with plumbing works as the next logical step towards that.
Additional life and committee members are paramount to the continued operation of this society. Everyone who is willing to step up has talents KAS can utilise, so please keep promoting involvement in our enterprises to all and sundry.
Wishing the incoming committee every success for 2023.
